This beautifully crafted Bee House is meticulously handmade by JCs Wildlife using recycled Poly Lumber. Featuring a sturdy, screwed construction with stainless steel screws and routed edges, this house is built to last, ensuring it maintains its vibrant, UV-protected colors for years to come. The interior boasts 8 rows of removable, charred pine panels that provide the perfect nesting environment for mason bees, making cleaning and maintenance a breeze.
Designed to attract a variety of bees, including mason, orchard, leaf-cutter, aphid, and carpenter bees, this bee house should be positioned 3-5 feet off the ground, facing east or southeast to capture the morning sun that helps the bees start their pollen-collecting activities early. The included mounting hardware makes it easy to attach the nesting box to the side of a post or building. It's important to avoid placing the bee house near areas where pesticides or herbicides are used.
Constructed using a combination of pine rows and recycled poly lumber, this Small Mason Bee House is built to withstand any weather conditions. The resilient, stain-proof poly lumber ensures the house maintains its pristine appearance, never cracking, splitting, or fading over time.
As the weather starts to warm up in the spring, typically around 55°F, adult mason bees will emerge from their winter dormancy and begin mating. The female bees will then seek out suitable nesting sites, such as the provided bee house, to lay their eggs. It's crucial to have the bee house set up and ready before the adults emerge to ensure they have a welcoming environment to call home.
After the eggs hatch, the larvae will feed on the abundant pollen and nectar within each nesting slot. By late June, the larvae will spin cocoons and begin their transformation into adult bees. During this time, no external bee activity will be visible, and it's important not to disturb the house.
In the fall, the panels can be removed to reveal the cocoons inside the slots, with each nesting slot potentially containing up to 8 cocoons. At this point, the cocoons can be carefully removed and stored in a refrigerator for the winter months.
When the temperature reaches 57°F for several consecutive days, typically in late February or early March, the stored cocoons can be placed back outside to allow the adult bees to emerge. It's crucial to protect the cocoons by leaving them inside the container and providing a small hole for the bees to escape.
Mason bees are remarkable pollinators, up to 30-60 times more effective than honey bees. A single female mason bee can do the work of 100 honey bees, and they are known for their non-aggressive nature, making them safe for children to observe.
This Multi-Tiered Bee House, with its 8 Removable Routed Charred Pine Panels, Easy-to-Remove Locking Block, and Resilient, Recycled Poly-Lumber Construction, is designed to provide a welcoming and secure nesting environment for these valuable pollinators. Detailed instructions are included to ensure the successful use of the bee house and the nurturing of mason bees.
