Swarm Science: Elevating Your Swarm Trapping Journey
Swarm Science is a lure that will take your swarm trapping efforts to new heights. This lure is a unique blend of the naturally occurring compounds found in the Nasonov pheromone, which honey bees release from their Nasonov gland to guide other bees to the hive and, in this case, to the new home site (your trap) chosen by the colony. By utilizing Swarm Science, you will significantly enhance your ability to trap honey bee swarms, adding to your colonies and saving you hundreds of dollars compared to buying bees.
Swarm trapping is not a matter of luck; it's a science! While it may seem that swarms can end up in random places, making us think they will choose anywhere as their new home, this is not the case. The swarms we see represent a very small percentage, as the vast majority move into new home sites that we never witness. Thanks to the extensive research conducted by Dr. Thomas Seeley on honey bee swarms, we now know how to maximize the number of swarms we can successfully trap during the swarm season.
In my own suburban neighborhood last year, I was able to trap 10 swarms using just 3 traps!
Achieving Swarm Trapping Success in 4 Steps:
Pheromones: Using Swarm Science replicates the complex chemistry of the Nasonov pheromone that honey bees use to attract swarms to new home sites. In addition to the Swarm Science lure, you can also incorporate old comb into your swarm traps.
Placement: Position your swarm traps 10-15 feet off the ground, near the trunk of a tree.
Trap Size: The trap must be 40L in size to have the best chance of attracting swarms. This can be achieved by stacking two 5-frame deep nuc boxes or using a single 10-frame deep box with an entrance of 1.5-2 square inches.
Timing: Place your traps in early spring, a few weeks before the first swarm is spotted in your area. Scouts begin searching for new home sites even before the swarm leaves the colony.
